Spring Meeting 2014

To: All Michigan Chapter VHPA Members,

Past President Charlie Martin always worked up a flyer type announcement for upcoming meetings.  As you can see, I’m not doing that this time.

The next general meeting will be held on Saturday, May 3rd at The Log Jam Restaurant, 110 W. Jefferson, Grand Ledge.  It’s right off Bridge Street in beautiful downtown Grand Ledge.
We have the “Back Room” reserved for our group starting at noon.  That’s 12:00 pm or 1200 hours or Mickey’s big and little hands will be on 12.  You can order off the menu.
By then I’ll hope spring will finally be here (I’ve got a mini-snowstorm going outside my window as I’m writing this) and you can break away from your spring clean-up chores.
This will be a social gathering with a very limited agenda.  Bring your Vietnam memorabilia, photos, souvenirs, and war stories (fiction, non-fiction, or outright lies – who’s going to know?).

Hope to see you all there.

May 26 – Memorial Day – “Yankee Air Museum”, Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti – Vietnam display dedication 10am-4pm. Their new exhibit includes a restored (static) UH-1, F-4, O2 and various uniforms / displays. http://www.yankeeairmuseum.org/

June 7 – “Kazoo Air Zoo” (tentative Vietnam theme – details unavailable) http://www.airzoo.org/

June 21 – “Lest We Forget” – SWMR Airport, Benton Harbor – WWII, Vietnam aircraft, camps, re-enactments. Medevac & Slick from American Huey 369. This is a non-profit organization, so only members can fly. Membership rides available. Annual membership is $100 per person. But, if you don’t want to fly, the displays and re-enactments are top drawer. http://www.lestweforgetusa.org/

June 28 – “Dayton Air Show” – Dayton, OH – one of the outstanding Midwest airshows. UH-1 and AH-1 rides provided by Army Aviation Heritage foundation. UH rides were $60 last year and there are two AH-1 ride options (short and long). If I remember correctly, last year it was $375 and $450…but don’t quote me. https://www.daytonairshow.com/

July 4 – “VHPA National Reunion”, Louisville, KY – American Huey 369 (Medevac & Slick) and “Bandit” (OH-6) will be performing a re-enactment on the riverfront for VHPA and general public. Army Aviation Heritage Foundation may also include a Cobra (not confirmed at this date).
July 5 – Bowman airfield, just East of Louisville, KY – American Huey will be offering membership flights. Army Aviation Heritage Foundation may also have the Cobra there for rides. http://www.vhpa.org/news.htm

August 9 – “Thunder Over Michigan”, Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti – Another great airshow. This will be the first time the AF Thunderbirds are scheduled to be the main attraction. Army Aviation Heritage Foundation will have UH-1s and the Cobra available for rides. http://www.yankeeairmuseum.org/airshow/#

August 29-31 – “The Moving Wall”, Hamburg, Michigan – American Huey will have one UH-1 available for membership flights. In addition, at a respectable distances from the Wall memorial, Hamburg will be hosting a Vietnam era “Bob Hope USO show” Friday and Saturday nights. The Bob Hope impersonator performs in Las Vegas. I have seen him…he is great. http://www.themovingwall.org/

September 6-7 – Selfridge ANG Base “Open House and Air Show”. http://www.selfridgeopenhouse.com/
